    In Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, nearly 80 % of the scholars cycle to high school. “A culture of cycling exists in Kochi. What is required is to create a safe environment for them,” says Prakash P Gopinath, the bicycle mayor of Thiruvananthapuram who’s coordinating the Cycle With Kochi mission launched in October 2021.

    To do this, there are plans to work with the native administration to curtail site visitors between 9 am and 9.30 am when most faculties open. “It should be a message for the public that the road is also for cyclists and that we care for our children,” says Prakash

    On World Bicycle Day, June 3, Bicycle Brigades shall be inaugurated at Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir in Elamakkara as they launch in Ernakulam District’s colleges. These will comprise scholar and trainer co-coordinators, who will establish protected routes for college students who cycle to high school by liaising with native site visitors police and Student Police Cadets. “The main aim of forming these cycling clubs in schools is to integrate the culture of using non-motorized transport, and a healthy and non-polluting way of life in students,” says Prakash.

    The Bicycle Brigades shall be established in colleges of the 74 wards of Kochi Municipal Corporation and shall be coordinated by 21 bicycle champions. Prakash explains that the 74 wards come underneath 21 circles and every circle will choose a bicycle champion who’s an fanatic and promotes this sustainable mode of journey.

    “When a group of students cycling together to their school are joined on the route by other students on their cycles, it is a bicycling train. We must ensure that the cyclists have a safe journey. This can be done by involving the traffic police. Senior students can be entrusted with the task of leading the convoy and of safety,” he says including that cyclists should know and promote the truth that their selection of journey makes them a part of local weather change motion. “The responsibility of bringing in this shift, of reverting to a non-motorized transport rests with us.”

    New routes

    Cycle With Kochi’s first main programme, to coach Kudumbashree ladies to cycle, began in January 2022. Since then it has skilled 350 ladies in several ages teams.

    Another distinctive initiative is a survey of small cycle restore outlets that exists within the metropolis. There are 116 such outlets and their areas shall be integrated in Google Maps.

    On May 18, 18 biking golf equipment held a ‘Ride of Silence’ in honour of the cyclists who died in highway accidents. The motion introduced them a promise of set up of  biking racks in 50 spots within the metropolis by CSML.

    Kusum Parikh, 65, is studying to cycle, taught by Zeenath Shihab, a homemaker and one of many volunteers who teaches Kudumbashree ladies to journey. Zeenath has thus far taught 81 ladies. “Fear”, she says is the largest hindrance. “Most women are between the ages 45 to 60. Many are ASHA workers. The skill has empowered them, they now cycle to work, are independent and save money and time.” Kusum is thrilled to be taught biking, and has the help of her son and daughter, who’ve promised to purchase her an e-scooter as soon as she turn into proficient in biking.

    Sustainable mode

    In 2017, the Integrated Sustainable Urban Transport Systems for Smart Cities (SMART-SUT) mission was launched in Kochi, Coimbatore, and Bhubaneshwar. In February 2021, Kochi Mayor, Anil Kumar, declared 2021 because the ‘Year of Green Urban Mobility. Later, in October, the ‘Cycle With Kochi’ programme was launched to advertise biking as a most popular mode of commuting throughout all of the 74 wards of Kochi.

    A collaboration between Kochi Municipal Corporation (KMC), CSML(Cochin Smart City Mission Limited) and C- HED (Centre for Heritage, Environment and Development), the mission is underway on eight grounds throughout town, with a coach allotted to every floor. GIZ, a German Agency for International Co-operation, is supporting the mission by offering analysis and know-how help.

    In town, on a bicycle

    “Cyclosportive Kochi” – The biking occasion shall be carried out on June 5 2022 (Sunday) on “ World Environment Day“ to advertise wholesome dwelling and biking as a mode of inexperienced transport. This would be the membership’s sixty fifth 200 km plus journey.
